Importing an Ethereum Wallet to macOS
After moving your Bitcoin assets from Ubuntu to macOS, you will need to import them to your new system. This article will guide you through importing your Ethereum wallet.
Prerequisites:
- Make sure you have an Ethereum-compatible wallet installed on your Mac.
- You have backed up your wallet.dat file using the bitcoin-qt tool.
- Your Ethereum account is still active and has at least one balance.
Importing an Ethereum wallet:
- Download the Bitcoin-Wallet for macOS (i.e., .app file):
You can download the Bitcoin-Wallet app from [Bitcoin.org] ( or install it from the App Store, if available.
- Open the downloaded .app file:
- On your Mac, locate the “.app” file and double-click to open it.
- Follow the setup wizard: Bitcoin-Wallet will guide you through a series of questions, including choosing an app password (if prompted). Be careful when creating an app password, as it is irreversible.
- Select the wallet.dat import option

- Select “Wallet” or “import from .dat file”.
- Configure wallet settings: Bitcoin-Wallet will ask you to set up your wallet network and other settings.
Importing an Ethereum wallet:
- Click “Continue” and select “Ethereum”:
- Select an Ethereum-compatible wallet (e.g. Electrum) from the list.
- Enter application password: If prompted, enter the application password to unlock the import process. This password is used for decryption purposes only.
- Browse and select backup file
: Click “Browse” to locate the .dat file from the backup you created earlier.
- Verify import process: Bitcoin-Wallet will perform a validation check on the imported wallet data. If everything looks good, you will be prompted to save the updated wallet.dat file.
Updating your Bitcoin wallet:
After importing your Ethereum wallet, be sure to update it with the latest information from the Ethereum network. You can do this by running:
bitcoin-wallet - update
Confirming the imported Ethereum wallet:
- Check wallet balance: Log in to your Ethereum account and verify that your wallet shows the correct balance.
- Check transactions: Perform a simple transaction, such as creating a new coin or withdrawing funds.
